Petite Sirah? No...not a small Syrah or Shiraz. In
fact, it's something completely different. It's a bold spicy wine full
of character and complexity, AND when it is done right, it's something
completely different. Absolutely perfect for stemming off the e ffects of cabin fever in the
doldrums of winter.
Once again, Bruce Walker and JT Cellars bring us a magnificent Petite
Sirah from the Lodi region of California. This one is
definitely bold with a big mouth feel and pronounced notes of dark
fruit, tobacco and a harmonious mix of spices that I couldn't even begin
to pick them out individually. This is my wine of choice for a
stay-at-home movie-night when the wind outside is howling and you
couldn't possibly think that the mercury could go any lower.
This one drinks fine by itself due to the great aromas and complexity as
well as the absence of harsh tannins that normally accompany an equally
bold, yet young Cabernet from the same region.
However, my pairing of choice would be a big old pot of
comfort food with come kick to it, like Texas chili or Buffalo wings.
You should be able to find this and other wines from JT Cellars (check
out the Merlot if you can find it, very limited production) at most
smaller shops in Northern Virginia. I happen to know that it
is usually in stock at WineStyles
in South Riding. Call for pricing, but I'm pretty sure it's under $25.
Anyone have any other winter-time favorites?
